God's Gift of Language 4 book is teaching about language skills. The authors divide the material into 170 lessons. The lessons are divided into two sections which are language and writing. The language focuses on learning the part of speech and punctuation in sentences. While the writing focus on the process itself. Students can learn about making a correct sentence, the part of speech, and how to diagram a sentence. When students can analyze the sentence by understanding the rule of the sentence, it must at least has a subject and predicate—knowing the part of speech helps the students to understand the meaning of each word. While diagramming sentences helps the students to simplify sentences by grouping the words visually. Thus, it helps the students to build their language skills.
First, to learn language skills, the book explains each topic and examples. The explanation was explained shortly and clearly. The authors give sentences that relate to students' daily life. Second, the book has a bunch of exercises. The exercises are divided into sections that are mentioned as Think, Write, Proof, and Remember. The authors provide many reviews, and the topic of the question is also repeated sometimes. Then, the glossary part is written in order, giving information about the topic lesson along with definitions and examples. The next part is writing, where the students learn to write a five-paragraph historical essay. The homework section is also written in the book. The homework is designed for students lesson by lesson. The last one is the 5 part, which provides other exercises for students to answer. It is similar to the homework part, but only shorter than the homework. Those parts of the book may help students to develop their language skills.
The explanation of each topic, which is short and precise, helps the students understand the meaning rather than reading a paragraph of explanation and description of the topic being discussed. The exercises part gives students a chance to practice their skills. The more students practice, the more they develop their cognitive skills. It is even suitable for their psychological development, which makes them more confident in answering questions. Next, the review part of the book can help the students memorize the material they have learned before going to the next topic. Glossary is needed and a must in a teaching and learning book since it helps the students and even the teacher find out or summarize the book. The writing part helps students to become creative. Learning to write, summarize and learn to edit their writings help them to be able to analyze the story. Then they can rewrite it in their own words with correct grammar. The Homework parts help make the book looks organized since it has its part out of explanation and exercises pages. Take 5 can help students sharpen their ability to think and answer quickly. Those parts are the strength of learning this book.
However, based on the teaching and learning process, the book has some things that could be improved. The students need more examples. The book has a short and clear explanation which benefits the students to know the definition and use of the topic. However, they are not only learning the definition, but they have to analyze each part. In class, the take 5 part is unnecessary since it seems repetitive and similar to the review parts. Because all of the review parts are also in the form of exercises that need to be answered by the students, the review parts can be written as a summary for each topic since there are already many exercises. Of course, exercises can be used to assess their abilities. However, it could also be a problem for slow learning, which could affect their confidence since they have to do the exercises multiple times. Providing a page complete with examples after explaining each topic might help the students analyze quickly.
God's Gift of Language 4 teaches grammar skills by providing short explanations with many exercises. The book provides learning of sentences, parts of speech, and diagrams, along with the review in the form of exercises. In conclusion, the book has some strengths to help students develop their language skills, especially for the ones who are good at doing exercises. However, slow learners need to have more examples before starting to do exercises. Read LessRead less about Title: God's Gift of Language 4
