My daughter, failed Kindergarten and 1st grade in the public school. In Kindergarten she only learned 6 letters of the alphabet, the first time around. When she entered 1st grade the 1st time around she tested at the beginning kindergarten level. She could only read 3 words in 1 min. Within 7 months she was up to 9 words a min. I became frustrated that she wasn't improving and they couldn't tell me why. She received extra speech, reading and math help ever day in the public school! I decided to buy the Abeka independent program w/o the video, for 1st grade and start at the beginning of the school year. Within 2 months she was up to 14 words a min. and she was starting to answer her combinations with confidence. She had failed ALL tests in public school for the year when I started her in Abeka. By the end of the school year she was getting more problems correct but was still failing. The summer started and I upgraded her Abeka to unaccredited with the video. I learned very quickly why she hadn't progressed. She mumbled through everything. She didn't even know her pledge of allegiance! She wouldn't even try to answer questions. Once I figured out what the problem was, I paused the video and we worked through each class. Lots of tears over the next 4 months. I just timed her reading and she was at 40 words a min. She completes all speed drills before the time is up. Her tests are mostly in the A range now. When she starts to cry because she thinks it is so hard I tell her look how far you have come in 4 months! She beams with pride and calms down and moves forward. We do spend up to 7 hours on work each day. I told her the more you get caught up the easier it will be. She should be in 3rd grade. She will finish the 1st grade program by Halloween, she will get caught up. She was convinced she couldn't learn in school. Now she sees what her efforts have accomplished. She is capable. She has a speech impairment and I write down sounds and words she has problems with and her speech teacher works with her to improve. We started off taking more than a day to finish 1 days worth of work, now we finish within a normal school day. I told her she will finish by lunch like her older siblings did, but it takes effort and time. I am here to help her each step of the way! Besides, with my brain surgery I lost a lot of my vocabulary etc. I am learning with her LOL! It is a 2 for 1! I love the games that are on the TV's you have in the classroom. I hope you are updating the other grades soon! Abeka does need to move towards the kids learning how to learn through technology by middle school. The old school ways need to be taught first!
