Teaching is a profession that requires a great amount of energy and enthusiasm, so what do you do when those are lacking? Discouragement happens to all of us, but remembering the following tips can make a huge difference when we’re feeling zapped:
Stay grounded in your faith
Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Lean on your faith when things get tough. Take a deep breath, pray and let your faith ground you in the moment. God is always with you.
Take it one day at a time
Tackle one challenge at a time. Focus on what’s in front of you. Make small lists of two to three simple tasks you can quickly cross off instead of staring at one long to-do list.
Avoid procrastinating
It’s tempting to procrastinate grading those exams or filling out administrative paperwork, but putting off these tasks weighs us down. Think of how great it feels to check these things off our to-do lists! Make sure to complete these tasks regularly so that they don’t build up unnecessarily and cause stress.
Establish good classroom routines
When we’ve established classroom routines, our school days just go smoother. If it feels as if you’ve lost a little control of your classroom management, spend a few lessons reviewing your protocol for when your students turn in work, have a question, get back from recess or lunch, or need to use the restroom.
Maintain gratitude
Being thankful isn’t just for November! At any time of year, put up a Gratitude Board on a prominent part of your classroom wall, and have students write the things they’re grateful for on index cards or sticky notes. Add several of your own. It’s sure to lift your mood every time you pass by.
Remember, we can do hard things. It may seem difficult to stay focused and positive when things seem to keep going wrong, but with the above advice, we can stay energized throughout the school year.
